Politics Police seek more manpower for specialised units AA News Desk Police have called for increasing manpower in Bangladesh Police's specialised units to effectively tackle evolving security challenges, including industrial security, cybercrime prevention, highway safety, tourism protection, and VIP security. According to relevant sources at the Police Headquarters, several specialised units - including the Industrial Police, River Police, Tourist Police, Highway Police, and Armed Police Battalion (APBn) - are currently operating with limited manpower despite their expanding responsibilities, BSS reports. Stakeholders said adequate personnel, training, and logistical support are essential to ensure effective policing and public safety across the country. Experts particularly stressed the need to strengthen the Industrial Police in line with the country's expanding industrial sector, export-oriented garment industry, and emerging economic zones. Although Industrial Police activities are being currently operated in several regions, officials said additional units and increased manpower are needed to provide comprehensive security coverage to all major industrial areas. Similarly, there have been growing calls to enhance the operational capacity of the River Police to combat crimes on waterways, prevent smuggling, and ensure security at river ports. With the rapid expansion of the tourism sector, officials have also emphasized the need to increase the number of trained personnel in the Tourist Police. Concerned officials believe that strengthening specialised police units with skilled manpower and technology-driven modern policing would improve public services and reinforce the country's overall security framework. Meanwhile, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has sought 5,000 additional personnel and permanent office buildings to improve efficiency and expand operations nationwide. PBI Chief Additional Inspector General of Police Mohammad Mustafa Kamal told BSS recently the unit currently has 2,031 personnel and operates from rented offices in 42 districts. "Two proposals for increased manpower and facilities have been sent to the Home Ministry earlier," he said. Established in 2012, the PBI investigates complex crimes, cybercrime, terrorism, and organised offences using specially trained officers and modern equipment. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed in a recent programme of police also stressed the importance of enhancing the capacity of the Tourist Police as part of broader efforts to modernise the force and ensure better services. "Strengthening this unit is crucial for boosting the tourism sector, ensuring security for visitors, and creating a positive image of the country," he said. Officials said the government's efforts to strengthen specialised police units reflect its commitment to transforming the police force into a more modern, technology-driven, and people-friendly institution.
